Cosmic Cavern

Keith Haring’s best friend, Kenny Scharf is the inventor of the Day-Glo cave from the 80s-90s. Today, his Cosmic Cavern inspires the deco of all the recording and rehearsal studios in Brooklyn. The idea: to pack in fake-fur, ‘kitsch’ bric-a-brac and ‘space age’ furniture, finishing the look off with a black light to create a hilarious and surreal neon, 3-D effect. The first cave was discovered almost by chance one day in 1981, when the artist discovered a secret room while squatting in a townhouse in Times Square. In 1996, it became the official decoration of The Tunnel nightclub in Manhattan. Last year, the 52-year-old Kenny Scharf created a new version in the cellar of his house, no 993a Metropolitan Ave, deep in Williamsburg. Dance parties followed, one after the other. A private venue for raving the night away, but where you will no doubt end up as long as you hit on the right bar at the right time.
